Torreão,Jacira Neves da Costa; Rocha,Arturene Marques; Marques,Carlo Aldrovandi Torreão; Bezerra,Leilson Rocha; Gottardi,Fernanda Patrícia; Araújo,Marcos Jácome de; Souza Júnior,Edmilson Lúcio de; Oliveira,Ronaldo Lopes.
The objective of this study was to determine how concentrate supplementation during late third gestation and lactation affects ewe and offspring performance from birth to weaning. Thirty-six ewes and their offspring (n = 32) were used. Eighteen Morada Nova and 18 Santa Inês ewes were artificially inseminated with semen from Dorper ram and distributed in a completely randomized factorial arrangement (2 × 2) consisting of two supplementation levels (5 and 15 g kg-1 of BW) and two breeds (Morada Nova and Santa Inês) or two crosses (Dorper × Morada Nova and Dorper × Santa Inês). The ewes were weighed, their body condition was evaluated during pregnancy, and the weaning weight of the lambs at up to 70 days old was measured. There was no effect of breed or...

Cabral Filho,S.L.S.; Abdalla,A.L.; Bueno,I.C.S.; Gobbo,S.P.; Oliveira,A.A.M..
The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional value of three sorghum cultivars with different concentrations of condensed tannins in sheep diets. Six adult sheep (LW=56kg) with rumen and duodenal fistulas were assigned to experimental groups using two 3x3 Latin Square designs. The diets were formulated using three sorghum cultivars: LTC (low-tannin cultivar), MTC (medium-tannin cultivar) and HTC (high-tannin cultivar). Microbial nitrogen (MN) concentration in the duodenum was measured using a 15N trace technique. LTC, MTC and HTC diets presented values of 788, 722 and 747 (SE=20.6) g kg-1 for dry matter digestibility and 633, 535 and 530 (SE=35.8) g/kg for crude protein digestibility. The LTC diet was significantly different from the other diets...

Growth and hematological responses of tambaqui fed different amounts of cassava (Manihot esculenta) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Aride,P.H.R.; Oliveira,A.T.; Oliveira,A.M.; Ferreira,M.S.; Baptista,R.B.; Santos,S.M.; Pantoja-Lima,J..
ABSTRACT Tambaqui,Colossoma macropomum is a fish of primary importance in Brazilian aquaculture and in the Amazon region in particular. The aim of this work is to analyze the combined effects of physical training and levels of dietary cassava (Manihot esculenta) on the hematological parameters, food intake, conversion efficiency, growth ratio and swimming performance of this fish. A diet for tambaqui consisting of 30% cassava caused decreases in weight gain and specific growth rate compared with the control group. Diets containing 15% or 45% cassava did not affect these indices and did not cause hematological changes in tambaqui juveniles, indicating that some amount of cassava can be used as an alternative energy source for this important aquaculture...

Nogueira-Filho,Sérgio Luiz Gama; Martins,Karen; Borges,Rogério Martins; Mendes,Alcester; Nogueira,Selene Siqueira da Cunha; Bindelle,Jérôme.
ABSTRACT To assess the ability of the collared peccary ( Pecari tajacu ) to digest dietary fiber, four adult male collared peccaries were randomly assigned to a 4 × 4 Latin square design to determine the effects of feeding non-traditional feed ingredients, taken from palm trees with different levels of dietary fiber, on intake and coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) and mean retention time. Four experimental diets were provided ad libitum: corn and soybean meal-based control diet; corn and palm kernel cake-based diet; corn and peach palm byproduct-based diet; and hay, palm kernel cake, and peach palm byproduct-based diet. The CTTAD of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were 0.80±0.09 and 0.61±0.21, respectively....

Metabolizable energy and amino acid digestibility of soybean cake subjected to different dry extrusion temperatures for broilers R. Bras. Zootec.
Lima,Marcos Fabio de; Lima,Cristina Amorim Ribeiro de; Dilelis,Felipe; Gomes,Augusto Vidal da Costa; Freitas,Leonardo Willian de.
ABSTRACT Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the apparent metabolizable energy (AME), nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn), and standardized ileal amino acid digestibility coefficient (SIDC) of extruded soybean cake (ESC) at four different extrusion temperatures: 90, 100, 110, and 120 °C. In experiment 1, 300 male broilers were randomly distributed into four treatments (600 g kg−1 reference diet + 400 g kg−1 of SBC at different extrusion temperatures) + reference diet, with six replicates of 10 birds. A metabolic assay using the total excreta collection method was performed from 14 to 23 days to determine AME and AMEn. Quadractic effect of the extrusion temperature was observed, with the maximum AMEn value estimated as 3424.99...

Fernandes,Raimunda Thyciana Vasconcelos; Arruda,Alex Martins Varela de; Costa,Monik Kelly de Oliveira; Lima,Patrícia de Oliveira; Santos,Luiz Odonil Gomes dos; Melo,Aurora da Silva; Marinho,Jéssica Berly Moreira.
ABSTRACT With this study we aimed to evaluate and compare physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of frozen and chilled chicken meat. Only the prime cuts (breast, thighs, and drumsticks) were considered for the analysis of chemical composition, pH, color, water-holding capacity (WHC), thawing-cooking loss (TCL), and shear force (SF). For microbiological analysis, mesophilic bacteria, thermotolerant coliforms, and Salmonella spp. were considered. The frozen and chilled chicken meat showed no PSE (pale, soft, and exudative) or DFD (dark, firm, and dry) type of anomalies. The chromaticity showed higher redness in the breast (a* = 0.23) and yellowness in the thigh (b* = 5.64) for the frozen meat. The chilled meat showed better values for...
